Romsey Councillors have expressed support for the Vinery way school street scheme being made permanent which was today approved at the Cambridgeshire county council Highways and Transport committee.

Romsey City Councillor Mairéad Healy spoke during the committee debate today, where she advocated for the extension, commenting:

“I am so glad that this fantastic scheme will continue and wanted to re-iterate at the committee today the powerful impact this has made in Romsey in ensuring the safety of our local school children during school drop off times and also encouraging active travel from a young age-which myself and my colleague Cllr Pounds have seen first-hand when we observed the restrictions in action at school drop off times. The measures have enjoyed overwhelming local community support in Romsey and I am so glad the committee members agreed with me and voted to extend the measures.  I very much hope it can also be rolled out to other areas so that other school children across the city can also benefit from such a scheme.

She continued:

“I also wanted to pay tribute to the local school parents who initiated this scheme and have  volunteered twice a day to implement it in the past year at school drop off times- it has been a real community team effort from them.”
