Cambridge resident Rahima Ahammed says she wants to inspire more women to go into politics including those who wear the full veil by seeking election in the upcoming Cambridge by-election for Trumpington ward.

If successful, she will be the first Councillor to wear the garment, which covers the whole face except for the area around the eyes. And she understands she would also be the first of any party in the UK.

She explained:

“The main reason I’m standing for election is I want to break down barriers and inspire other women to come forward to stand as a councillor. We need more politicians who are truly representative of the diverse communities we have in Cambridge and across the UK.”

She continued:

“There is also a great misconception about females who wear the full veil in the UK. This is based on the media’s portrayal and it doesn’t help that the current Prime Minister has made comments comparing women wearing the full veil to ‘letterboxes’ and ‘bank robbers’. I want to break down this stigma and show that women like myself are confident, empowered and ready to listen and work with our wonderful residents in Trumpington and serve our vibrant community.”

Leader of Cambridge City Council, Cllr Anna Smith also added her support

“We are delighted that Rahima is our candidate in Trumpington. Rahima is a powerhouse who is well known in our community, having worked as a supply teacher in several Cambridge schools, as well as through her community involvement with various charities in the past 30 years. We would be incredibly proud if Rahima were to make history and become the first ever niqab wearing politician, blazing a trail for more women behind her.”
