"I’ve always known that Cambridge is strong, but these past weeks have shown just how strong it really is. Thank you all. I know that we will get through this together. Please stay safe, and look after yourselves and your families.”

Early yesterday we issued a joint message of solidarity with all Cambridge residents and businesses, co-signed by all Cambridge city and county councillors and MPs which you can read in full here.  Lewis Herbert, Labour Councillor for Coleridge and Leader of Cambridge City Council, explained the decision to suggest this unusual step;

“These are worrying times for communities across our city. It is not the time for party politics. That is why we felt it was vital to lead a joint initiative and letter with colleagues across Cambridge political parties and work with them collaboratively until the epidemic is over to support and reassure the residents we were elected to represent.

“We’re in completely new territory with the coronavirus epidemic, and it is our responsibility as your elected representatives to support and help you as much as we possibly can – whether that’s to access the food and medicines you need, stay in touch with your networks, keep your business afloat or your family safe.

All Labour Councillors across Cambridge will be busy supporting their local Mutual Aid network in their wards, and happy to respond to emails from residents too, particularly to help vulnerable and low income families.

 “I’m very proud of the way in which officers, councillors and you, the community have come together to keep Cambridge safe and well, and to support the most vulnerable in our city.  I’ve always known that Cambridge is strong, but these past weeks have shown just how strong it really is. Thank you all.

“I know that we will get through this together. Please stay safe, and look after yourselves and your families.”
