Burrell's Walk
Newnham Labour City Councillor Cameron Holloway is working with Carbon Neutral Cambridge to campaign for a widening of the bridge at Cobbett’s Corner, at the east end of Burrell’s Walk.
Burrell’s Walk forms part of the main walking, cycling and wheeling route from North Newnham and the West Cambridge Site into Cambridge city centre. It is already heavily used by both cyclists and pedestrians, and this use is likely to increase substantially when the new Comberton Greenway is completed. For decades, Burrell’s Walk has included a tight bottleneck at the bridge over the Bin Brook. This is only 1.7m wide – less than half the recommended width for any bridge that is shared by pedestrians and cyclists. Cllr Cameron Holloway has heard from many residents who are concerned about the risk of collision here, especially at night.
Cameron has been working on this issue with Carbon Neutral Cambridge and, in January, plans to submit an application to Cambridgeshire County Council’s ‘Local Highway Improvement Scheme’ for funding to allow the bridge to be doubled in width, making use of the concrete foundations already in place.
Fortunately, widening the bridge to the south to match the path would have minimal impact on the green space, and would not require the removal of any trees.
If the application is to succeed, we need evidence of support from local residents so, if you are interested in this issue, please complete Carbon Neutral Cambridge’s short consultation at: https://carbonneutralcambridge.org/widen-burrells-walk-bridge/
