County Councillor for Abbey Division
Cllr Joan Whitehead previously lectured at the Education Faculty at Cambridge prior to becoming a County Councillor and has lived in Abbey since 1981.
Joan says: “I have been actively involved in union work in the university and campaigned successfully for improvements in conditions of service and equal opportunities for all University employees.
“As a County Councillor I aim to continue campaigning for equal opportunities, because most Tory-controlled authorities, like Cambridgeshire, are using ‘austerity’ as an excuse to make people redundant, and to undermine nationally agreed conditions of service and pay scales. Such measures should be opposed, and the hard-won rights of working people defended.”
Since Joan became your Labour County Councillor in 2013 she has played a leading role in representing our local community, and is currently the Leader of the Labour Group on the Council, as well as lead member on the Children and Young People’s Committee.
Joan has been successful in winning funding for youth facilities, residents’ parking schemes, cycleways and highways in our ward. She recently won £4,000 to make the dangerous Barnwell Road/Newmarket Road roundabout safer for cyclists and motorists.
Joan got residents’ parking in place at Silverwood Close and is working on a scheme for the Stanley Rd area. She won funding to improve safety at the Newmarket Rd/Barnwell Road roundabout and the Abbey Walk/Newmarket Rd crossing. Joan also successfully campaigned in getting a wider cycle path across Midsummer Common from Cutter Ferry bridge.
Joan was instrumental in winning £255,000 extra funding for additional youth space for the new East Barnwell Centre. The new, modern building will have an improved library, community rooms, a café and offices to better serve Abbey ward. Joan is also supports Abbey Meadows Primary School and the Fields Children’s Centre.
