Reg has been asking the County Council for a disabled parking bay outside his house so that he can get his wheelchair bound wife in and out of their car for several years.  The council’s reply was that as Reg had a garage at the back of his garden then he didn’t need a disabled bay.  The fact that Reg couldn’t push his wife up the garden in the wheelchair made no difference ‘rules are rules’ Reg was told.  When Dave heard Reg’s story whilst out canvassing he approached the County Council and met with a barrier of bureaucracy. So after talking with Reg Dave made two signs and put them on Reg’s front wall.  Dave also enlisted the help of the Cambridge Evening News and they produced an article but the council could not be shamed – the red tape said that if someone has a back access then they could not have a disabled parking bay and that was that.

It is this sort of rigid rule bound operationalisation of policy that we the residents often get caught up in and yet no one could help.  Reg remains with his home made parking bay and Dave hopes that if elected he will be able to apply more pressure.  Reg is a labour voter but this made no difference to Dave who says ‘everyone is entitled to be treated equally by activists and councillors alike and I am sure that the LidDem failure to get this issue solved was not partisan.’
