In mid-2020, two COVID emergency road schemes – in Mill Road and Newtown – were implemented using County Council experimental traffic orders (ETROs).

The ETROs allow temporary, ‘on the ground’ experiments, so real time effects on traffic can be measured and public views about the schemes assessed. Hundreds of people expressed a range of opinions about the schemes and completed online surveys.

A report from officers about Mill Road will go to the County Highways Committee for discussion in March 2021.

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) is reviewing traffic data and feedback on the Newtown scheme.

Implementation of Phase 2 in Newtown is planned for late January. This creates a closure point in Panton Street (between Saxon Street and Union Road) and reverses traffic flow in Norwich Street. There will be further public consultation about these extra measures.
