Plans for the future of Newmarket Road have been unveiled as part of a strategy to improve air quality, reduce congestion, and incentivise use of cycling and public transport. The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), which the Labour-run City Council is part of, have started consulting with the public on ideas to, amongst others:

  • Install smart sensors in the road to assist with traffic management and to prioritise buses
  • Reconfigure the Elizabeth Way roundabout by removing the subway
  • Improve safety and traffic flow at main junctions, including at Barnwell Road
  • Improve inbound and outbound cycle lanes

Abbey Councillors will work to ensure that GCP rules out any routes other than walking and cycling over our precious green spaces.

Abbey Labour City Councillor Nicky Massey said: “It is time Newmarket Road is looked at for future change. Fewer cars, better bus services and more room for cycling can only benefit Abbey residents and our city.”
