Labour Gain/Succcess
The crossing has now been repainted and the zig zag lines that were causing the confusion have been painted so as to make clear their intent – well done the council officer who met with us you actually did what you said  you were going to do.

Following concerns raised by residents about the safety of the crossing in Vinery Road – particularly how difficult it is for drivers to see people, particularly children, who may be preparing to cross and how difficult it is for children to see if the road is clear before they cross – Dave and the team at Romsey Labour knocked on every doors in Vinery Road and collected signatures for a petition calling for a safety audit.

As a result of your concerns we collected over 100 signatures and this Tuesday 4th February I was able to meet with an officer of the council and he suggested a number of improvements that have now been implemented and this is both impressive in the way the council officer acted and in the terms of how dangerous he must have believed the crossing was.  It also goes to show that when we knock on your door to listen that we actually do.

The crossing at school time – now clear and real visibility both for cars and for pedestrians.

What has been done

• all crossing markings are repainted

• on the park side of the crossing a small barrier is set up to prevent cars mounting the pavement

• the zigzag lines now make clear that it is illegal to park anywhere in the approach to the crossing

Despite the consultation some people were unhappy at the loss of car parking spaces.

It is important to point out that some people have complained about the lost parking spaces and lack of consultation – this is sad because this was an accident waiting to happen and in regard to consultation I knocked on every door in Vinery Road to collect the signatures for the petition and delivered two street letters to update people.  This is a difficult issue that points to the second biggest problem that people bring up on the doorstep – car parking.

Another Gain

Whilst the official was on site we were also able to discuss the lack of street cleaning in the area and the two spots close to the crossing where a depression has meant large puddles of water accumulate.

It is anticipated that all these difficulties will be overcome ASAP – if not in this financial year then the next.
