The Government have provided funding and instructed councils to promote cycling and walking in order to reduce the risk of spreading Covid19 as we come out of lockdown.

Covid 19 has shown us that reduced traffic, means that the air we breath contains less pollution.  Pollution has also been shown to increase the risks associated with Covid19.

Ever since Mill Road Summer (and before) many people in the area have called for a reduction in traffic on Mill Road.

In turn these people believe that reduced traffic would considerably increase the numbers of people using our local shops.  So it would be good for traders.  Romsey Labour support that position and have called for a reduction in traffic using the Covid19 funding, make cycling safer and maximise social distancing.

Many of the pavements on Mill Road do not allow for the two metre social distancing space so we are calling for a solution that provides this.

We have written to County asking for a multipartite solution that

• widens pavements so people can queue outside shops (maybe even allow traders to trade on the wider pavement

• increases footfall for the shops

• helps prevent Covid infection

• reduces pollution

• increases cycle safety

Working from our experience of last year’s Mill Road Summer  we also provided some suggestions and note many of these have been taken up by the County Council in their current plans.
