Mike Sargeant, West Chesterton
63 Gilbert Road, Cambridge CB4 3NZ Phone: 01223 690272 Email: mikesargeant@ntlworld.com
Mike Sargeant is one of your local Labour candidate for the City Council Elections in 2010. Mike has lived in West Chesterton for 9 years. He has 2 children at Chesterton Community College and works for the University of Cambridge in IT.
Mike has been a Governor at Milton Road School and has worked hard trying to make Gilbert Road safer. Mike says "The inability of the County Council to deliver a solution, when there is an acknowledged safety issue in Gilbert Road and a budget in place, illustrates the need for Councillors who deliver"
Mike will make sure that West Chesterton is properly represented whilst making sure the City Council delivers on Labour's priorities. "There is no evidence of Lib Dem councillors actively working on behalf of local people. They have taken West Chesterton voters for granted for too long" says Mike.
Paul McHugh, West Chesterton
8 Mulberry Close, Cambridge CB4 2AS Phone: 01223 528154
Paul McHugh has lived and worked in Cambridge for 30 years, 25 of them in West Chesterton. He lives in Mulberry Close and before that used to live on the other side of the ward in Victoria Park.
Paul knows the area really well; his two children, both now grown up, went to our local schools, Milton Road and Chesterton, and he has been a Governor of Chesterton Community College since 1992.
Paul works at Anglia Ruskin University on East Road where he is now the Dean of Students after spending most of his career teaching history. As a Governor Paul knows that more money has come into schools under Labour. It is never enough and Cambridgeshire is still badly-off under a Tory county council, but Labour in government has made a difference.
Locally, he is a strong supporter of Labour's campaign for affordable housing. The period of Lib Dem inertia that started in 2000 has to be brought to an end. Cambridge needs a dynamic boost to housing and no more Lib Dem delays.
Simon Watkins, West Chesterton
49 Victoria Park, Cambridge CB4 3EJ Phone: 01223 526157 Email: sra.watkins@ntlworld.com
Simon Watkins has lived in West Chesterton for 25 years. He is married to Mary and they have two grown-up children. Simon got involved with supporting both of the schools his children attended, initially through chairing the PTA, then as a School Governor for 10 years at St. Laurence's RC Primary, and for the last eight at Chesterton Community College.
He is chair of his local Residents Group in which he has been active for eighteen years since he set up a residents parking scheme.
He knows a lot about Council work as he worked as an accountant in local government for 34 years.
Simon is active in a number of voluntary organisations. He is a part-time adviser with the Citizens Advice Bureau. He is a keen walker, Treasurer of Cambridge Rambling Club, and much involved in organising the annual Oxfam Cambridge charity walk. He has sung with a local choir for nearly thirty years, and was their Chair for many years.
His priorities for the City Council are affordable housing, better public transport, more help for the vulnerable, and better safety fot the public against anti-social behaviour.
