Len Freeman, Romsey

23 Hope Street, Cambridge CB1 3NA. Phone: 01223 211455, email: len.freeman1@gmail.com

Len Freeman is standing as Labour's candidate for the City Council in Romsey

- an independent voice with fresh ideas for Romsey

Len has lived in Romsey for many years and is active in the local community, most recently in the No to Tesco campaign. A former engineering lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University and now an educational adviser, Len says "I look forward to standing as a councillor – my family has grown up in Romsey, and I would like to help make sure that Romsey stays a great place to live. I do want to push for more facilities for our area, which lately has become neglected. More facilities for young people and a greener Romsey with better refuse collections for example.

"There are some huge issues affecting Romsey - the likely development of Marshall's into a town the size of Huntingdon, the threat to Coldham's Common, congestion charging. These need someone who can bring an independent voice and fresh ideas to challenge the Lib Dems, who have all of Romsey's councillors at the moment, but don't seem to be doing very much. "

Len is a member of Romsey Allotments Society and the Cambridge Cycling Campaign. He was chair of the Netherhall School governors (his daughter's school) for five years. A member of the Woodcraft Folk, Len is also a director of a charity which provides low-cost holiday accommodation for young people.

Chris Freeman, Romsey

23 Hope Street, Cambridge CB1 3NA. Phone: 01223 211455, email: chris.freeman@freeuk.com

Chris Freeman is Labour's candidate for the County Council By-Election. Chris Freeman is well-known in Romsey and Cambridge, having lived and worked in the area for over 30 years.

She recently retired from the City Council's Community Development Section where she worked closely with many of the city's voluntary groups. Her clear-headed and friendly approach would be well deployed in the role of County Councillor for Romsey.

"I know how important it is that City and County Councils work together to ensure that Cambridge's planned population growth works well for both existing and new residents. Transport, community facilities and education are vital. I will be an active voice for you on the Council."

Chris also recognises what an impact the congestion charge would have in Cambridge, which looks likely to be imposed by a Tory led County Council on the city without any consultation. "We need to do something about the density of traffic in Cambridge and resources for more cycleways and bus services would be welcome. However, making Cambridge residents pay up to £5 a trip just to drive across Cambridge will drive even more of the lower paid workforce out of the city."

Chris is a founder member of the Cambridge Woodcraft Folk and, with Len, helps to run a charity providing holiday opportunities for children and young people. She belongs to Romsey's Allotments Society.

Jonathan Goodacre, Romsey

326 Mill Road, Cambridge CB1 3NN Phone: 01223 513784 Romsey Labour Hotline 01223 511818

Jonathan lives on Mill Road in Romsey and campaigns actively in the local community. He says, "Over the last few years I have been involved in dealing with issues such as housing repairs, waste collection and recycling, road safety, recreational facilities, tax credits, parking and neighbour nuisance.

A particular concern is the way that new developments are being squashed into the most densely populated part of town. If we are going to have new housing in Romsey it needs to be a better mix, with houses for families, affordable housing and good layouts with plenty of open space. It is also vital that there is extensive and transparent consultation with people living nearby.

I like to get involved with local issues and was pleased to see the recent planning application of Tesco's rejected for Mill Road. I am also on the Mill Road Winter Fair Committee and enjoy making a positive contribution to life in the area." Jonathan works freelance in the arts, specialising in community and participatory arts projects. He worked for several years at The Junction in Cambridge and is an associate lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University.

He is a member of The Co-operative Party and in 2006 was Cambridge Labour Party's delegate to the Labour Party Conference in Manchester.

Paul Gilchrist, Romsey

75 Vinery Road, Cambridge, CB1 3DW Tel: 01223 511818

I have lived in Romsey for a number of years and have all ways been actively involved in the local community campaigning to help with issues effecting the area either as a Councillor or as Chair of a residents and traders association. As chair of the residents and traders association calling for and getting a higher police presence to deal with anti-social behaviour and helping organize the Mill Road winter fair, which we hope will become an annual event. I am a member of a charity that looks after some of the alms houses in Cambridge and a board member of a local social housing society.

Romsey is a great place to live but is being neglected by both the City and County councils, just compare our street light or paths to other areas in the City and I ask why, nothing is being done about it by the present councillors who only seem to appear at election times and promise much, but fail to deliver.

As your councillor I promised and delivered on pedestrian lights on Hemingford/Mill Road junction supported increased nursery places and opposed inappropriate housing for Romsey.

As a local resident know that Romsey has a great history and a fantastic community spirit, Romsey is a great place to live and I want to keep it that way.

Joe Gluza, Romsey

5 St Phillips Road, Cambridge, CB1 3AQ Phone: 01223 214036

Joe has lived in Romsey for more than 20 years, and during that time he has seen many changes. Rat-running traffic and finding a parking space were hardly a problem when he first came to the area!

As your county councillor Joe opposed inappropriate housing developments, campaigned for better community and recreational facilities and supported improved nursery provision.

Joe is a member of Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth.
