Len Freeman is your local Labour candidate for the City Council elections in 2010. A former engineering lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University and now an educational adviser, Len has been active in local politics for many years, including a stint as city councillor, and is now standing in Newnham.
Len has an allotment and is a member of the Cambridge Cycling Campaign. He was chair of the Netherhall School governors (his daughter's school) for five years. A member of the Woodcraft Folk, Len is also a director of a charity which provides low-cost holiday accommodation for young people.
Len says "I would like to help make sure that Newnham stays a great place to live. I will push for more facilities for our area, to make sure it does not become neglected. There are some huge issues affecting Newnham, like the North West Cambridge development. Newnham needs someone who can bring an independent voice and fresh ideas to challenge the Lib Dems, who have all of Newnham's councillors at the moment, but seem to have lost their way."

Local resident Rita Gaggs has lived in Newnham for 28 years. Rita worked as a secretary in a University department for 12 years before retiring in 2000, then working for three years as a volunteer in an Oxfam Shop. Rita and her husband Oliver have three children and four grandchildren.
Rita is especially concerned about the problem of dangerously sloping pavements along Grantchester Street. In icy weather these pavements are a danger to older people, wheelchair users and young families with pushchairs.
