Councillor Robert Dryden, Cherry Hinton

23 Wenvoe Close, Cambridge, CB1 9JG Phone: 01223 457246 Email: robert.dryden@cambridge.gov.uk

Wenvoe Close resident Robert Dryden has served as a Cherry Hinton city councillor for 13 years. Robert has lived in Cherry Hinton for most of his life. Both he and his four children went to local schools.

Robert is active in the local community as Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for the area, Chair of the Fulbourn Hospital Social Club and a member of the British Legion. He is also involved in "Friends with Disabilities" and is Chairman of the Colville Estate Residents' Association. He has been a school governor of the Spinney School for over 13 years.

Robert has been Mayor of Cambridge twice - last year he had the honour of being the 800th Mayor of Cambridge. He organized major fundraising activities for local charities including the Arthur Rank Hospice at Home, St John's Ambulance, Magpas, Press Relief and the Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Unit. His mayoral theme when in office was recognition of the work of the many organisations that contribute to protecting the community in Cambridge.

As mayor, Robert met Al Gore (ex Vice President of USA) when he visited Cambridge in 2007 to lecture on global warming (photo: courtesy of the University of Cambridge).

Robert sits on the following City Council Committees:

  • Planning
  • South Area
  • Councillor Russ McPherson, Cherry Hinton

    184 Church End, Cherry Hinton 457227 russ.mcpherson@cambridge.gov.uk

"I have lived in Cherry Hinton for 26 years with my wife Carole. I enjoy playing music at local folk clubs and the highland pipes whenever I can! I also enjoy motorcycling and good wine with friends. I am a MAGPAS volunteer for Cherry Hinton, and helped to establish a MAGPAS team for the area. I am also chair of the Cherry Hinton Community Safety Partnership (Neighbourhood Watch Scheme), safety advisor for the Cherry Hinton Festival, and a member of the British Legion."

"Traffic is an issue in every ward and Cherry Hinton is no different. Speed is a real problem on all our roads. Tackling instances of antisocial behaviour in the ward is an ongoing issue. However, the ward councillors work closely with the police and other bodies in an effort to keep the village free from disturbances."

    Russ is currently campaigning on:

  • "Hands Off Marshalls" - the campaign to look more carefully at building on the Marshalls site and address the economic and traffic implications of the plan. “By the Conservative County Council’s own estimates, building 11,500 houses on the airport area will lead to another 125,000 car trips into Cambridge a day. Their plans for a guided bus route across the commons to the airport are no more than a ‘sticking plaster’ solution to this problem.”
  • Antisocial Behaviour – Russ is very much involved in fostering better links with police and providing a safer environment for young people.
  • Curb your speed – a campaign for road users to slow down and make our roads safer.
  • Russ is chair of the Labour Group and sits on the following City Council committees:

  • Licensing
  • Standards (Labour Spokes)
  • South Area (Spokes)
  • County Councillor Christine Carter, Cherry Hinton

    18 Bridewell Road, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, CB1 9EP Phone: 01223 561426 Email: christine.carter@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Christine Carter is married with two daughters and one grandson and has lived in Cherry Hinton for 19 years.

Christine says, "When I first became your County Councilor I was worried about the state of Cherry Hinton. Shops were being broken into and the Library and Colville School were under threat of closure. However, now we have new shops including Tesco Express, Dorringtons and Peacocks; the Library is the second best in Cambridge with its people's network system that I was proud to launch; the High Street is soon to have permanent CCTV coverage; and Colville School, where I am a governor, is rated ‘very good’.”

Currently Christine is campaigning against the proposed move of the Joe Jennings bookmakers to premises besides the Cherry House Chinese on the High Street, and is also involved in the Hands off Marshalls campaign. “Although we know more houses must be built in the Cambridge area, we believe using the airfield itself in addition to the adjacent sites will not only add to congestion on our roads but also have a devastating impact on Cherry Hinton and the surrounding area.”

    Christine sits on the following:

    County Council committees:

  • Cambridgeshire Admission Forum
  • Catering Users Group
  • Communities Policy Development Group
  • Early Years and Childcare Advisory Board
  • Environment & Community Services Scrutiny Committee
  • Highways and Transport Policy Development Group
  • Standards Committee
  • Teachers Joint Consultative Committee
  • Outside Bodies:

  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority
  • Cambridgeshire Council for Voluntary Youth Service Executive Committee
  • Camsight
  • South East Regional Association for the Deaf
  • Councillor Stuart Newbold, Cherry Hinton

    20 Walpole Road, Cambridge, CB1 3TJ Phone: 01223 457225 Email: stuart.newbold@cambridge.gov.uk

Stuart Newbold was elected as a Labour & Co-operative city councillor for Cherry Hinton in 2006 having campaigned on local issues for many years previously. Stuart, a keen environmentalist, is Labour’s city council spokesperson on recycling, waste and the environment. Stuart is also keen to see more co-operative provision in Cambridge, especially in housing, where the ‘Community Gateway’ model could be used to safeguard existing council housing and help in building new council homes.

Prompt action by Stuart helped ensure that Lloyds-TSB stayed on the High Street after the council received a planning application to turn the branch into a takeaway. Stuart was also instrumental in helping keep the Royal British Legion Hall on Fisher’s Lane, itself the subject of a planning application in the summer of 2006. In 2007 Stuart arranged for street lighting to be installed between Sunmead Walk and the High Street.

Stuart is currently involved with Labour colleagues in seeking a judicial review of plans to develop Marshall’s airfield. “We are now looking at a mini-review of the Regional Spatial Strategy in the light of the evident difficulties that the current RSS is generating. What’s required for Cambridge East is a ‘Plan B’ for alternative sites to the area of the airfield per-se, whilst recognising the value of adding affordable homes on sites alongside the airfield - perhaps 4,000 of the 11,500 homes. There is no evidence that the transport difficulties that would accompany the complete development of the airfield site can or will be adequately addressed.”

Stuart’s emphasis is on helping to get resident’s problems solved and making improvements in the ward. “I have a tenacious approach and am very keen to see problems addressed and things fixed. I will also campaign aggressively to see much-needed improvements wherever possible, such as better street lighting, traffic safety measures, housing repairs, or environmental improvements for the High Street.”

Stuart sits on the following City Council committees:

  • Environment (Labour Spokes - Recycling, Environmental Services, and Climate Change)
  • South Area
