My name is Nicky Massey, and in Cambridge for around 5 years now with my husband and three living children. I work part time for a local charity called hoveraid and I volunteer for many events with East Anglia Childrens Hospice who looked after my youngest son.
My background is varied but means I have global view of the world. I was born on a council house estate in barking estate, before moving to the countryside in Lincolnshire and to a tiny village to live my grandparents. When I was 12 I moved back to Barking, first to live in a tower block in an extremely deprived area of town, (gasgoigne estate since demolished) and then to a social housing estate in Dagenham. My family are all from the East End of London, my father a builder and my grandfather, a naval man, used to work on the Tugs in the docks before he retired.
I have been the working mother, the working single parent, the single parent on benefits, the single mother to a disabled child on benefits and now the happily married parent working part time.
I know that life can sometimes be hard and a struggle as I have myself have been there. My activism started when I launched a campaign to get a crossing on Station road Cambridge, which I did successfully in just 4 months. It continued with the fight to stop the Peak Time Congestion Control Points coming into affect, transport and congestion do need to be tackled but I knew that the PCCP's were not the right answer and thankfully Lewis Herbert agreed.
I have run community events, Street parties, Halloween and Christmas events as I know that the heart of a community IS its community, and everyone who lives there.
