In response to outrageous Lib Dem claims that the Labour group have proposed cutting the extension of recycling facilities in flats, Labour Leader Councillor Lewis Herbert today said:
'Cambridge Labour Councillors want recycling in flats now and City Liberal Democrats are lying when they claim otherwise (in their latest press release).'Labour has pleaded for years for the LibDems to include recycling for flats in their budget for years, as flats have been ignored for two years since streets got extra recycling in 2005 (see Labour's earlier December 2004 motion below - which the LibDems rejected).
'Local Labour Councillors have already agreed extra recycling sites for flats with council officers including George Pateman Court in Petersfield which will be fully accessible to residents of the flats and which could also be available to residents of nearby narrow streets who also do not have the space to recycle easily'.
'Labour will be proposing dozens of further schemes for recycling in flats including for students in 2007, including further trials where neighbouring residents of small houses and narrow streets can also use them.
'Perhaps this attempted deception means the LibDems are finally waking up to the fact that their 'one size fits all recycling policy' does not work for a diverse city like Cambridge.'
Labour's alternate 2007 city budget also includes other recycling which the LibDems have ignored:
- £25,000 for three full new recycling centres as large areas of the city are ignored by the Lib Dems including new housing areas;
- more brown bag green waste/food waste collections.
