VERGING ON THE RIDICULOUS' - LABOUR COUNCILLORS CALL FOR ACTION ON LOCAL VERGES THAT LOOK MORE LIKE TANK EXERCISE GROUNDS

20 March 2008

Labour Councillors have called for action on local verges that look more like tank exercise grounds.

Local residents and Labour Councillors across Cambridge are demanding urgent citywide action to restore verges so damaged they look more like tank exercise grounds

Liberal Democrat Councillors including t'en Lib Dem council leader, David Howarth, promised in 2002 to make verges the council's "TOP PRIORITY". Since then, the council has fixed only 2 roads in 6 years, a rate that would take 600 years to deal with the 200 Cambridge roads that have appallingly damaged grass verges.

Labour's three point 'Verge Action Plan' was in their 2008 Alternative Budget - proposing massive improvement by 2010

1 Allow all residents to 'adopt' verges in front of their house, and give out free painted white rocks and guidance on safe use. Preferably, whole streets will jointly adopt their verges

2 Urgent two year £250,000 council protection and repair programme to restore the verges most neglected by the Lib Dem council

3 Yellow lining along main roads like Perne Road and Brooks Road, after local consultation, so that ALL illegal verge parkers can be ticketed (£100,000 over 2 years)

Some of the examples of streets with major verge parking problems are:

  • Arbury - Carlton Road/Mere Way/Alex Wood Road/Hurrell Road
  • Castle Ward - Belmore Close
  • Cherry Hinton - Church End
  • Coleridge Ward - Birdwood Road and Perne Road
  • East Chesterton - Kendal Way
  • Abbey ward - Whitehill Road
  • plus just as big problems in other wards/streets
