Mike Davey for Newnham

About Me

I’m Mike Davey. I’m married with three children and I have lived and worked in Cambridge for 20 years so I know the city well. Before I retired, I was a Director of Children and Families’ Services at the County Council so I know how councils work and how councillors can get things done. I’m also Chair of Governors at a local school, Chair of the Board of the young people’s charity Centre 33 and I’ve been involved with other community activities so I’m familiar with how communities work and how to make them work better.

Over my career, I’ve developed skills in meeting local people’s needs and I think those skills are transferable. Being a councillor is a different sort of role, with greater accountability to residents. It involves more face-to-face representation and I think I have the skills and experience to do that effectively.

Why I'm running for Newnham

Newnham is a very special place and its residents deserve an effective voice on the council to protect their interests and Newnham’s unique character. Cambridge has a Labour-run City Council and I think that I could be an effective, positive advocate for our community because I already work well with the Labour councillors running the city. As an ex local government officer, I have long experience of working to provide good services on limited budgets and, in the current climate of savage cuts to council funding, these skills would stand me in good stead on the City Council.

Now that I am retired, I have time to devote to serving the Newnham community and I have no political ambition other than to serve as a city councillor. If elected, this would be my absolute priority.
