Jeremy Corbyn joins Councillor Kevin Price to launch Labour’s Mayoral campaign

Jeremy Corbyn MP, Leader of the Labour Party, visited Cambridge on Saturday to help launch the campaign for Labour's candidate for the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Mayor, Cllr Kevin Price, ahead of the election in May.

Jeremy Corbyn visited the Water Lane council housing development in Cambridge delivered by the Labour-run City Council, of which Kevin Price is the Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Housing. He then addressed Labour Party members and activists to launch Labour's campaign for the Mayoral and County Council elections in May.

More social housing is set to be built across Cambridgeshire & Peterborough through the devolution deal which will create the Combined Authority. Kevin Price led negotiations with the Treasury to secure £170 million of investment in housing in the devolution deal.

This is the only such devolution deal reached in the country with a specific government fund to build additional social housing.

The £70m housing grant for Cambridge City Council in the Devolution Deal enables the Council to restart its building programme and deliver at least 500 new councils homes let at local housing allowance rent levels in the next five years.

Jeremy Corbyn MP, Leader of the Labour Party, said:

"It was fantastic to see this state of the art housing development delivered by the Labour-run council in Cambridge, and in particular by our candidate for Mayor, Kevin Price.

“As well as leading on the building of new council homes in Cambridge, Kevin led the negotiations which have secured a huge further investment in housing across Cambridgeshire & Peterborough.

“That's why he's best placed to be Mayor of the new Combined Authority- he has a proven record of securing investment for the area."

Deputy Council Leader and Labour Mayoral Candidate Kevin Price, said:

“It was wonderful to welcome Jeremy here today to view the quality, affordable housing that we in the Council have been determined to see built.

“I want this to be one of many cutting edge housing developments across the area, funded by the devolution deal I helped to negotiate

“If elected Mayor I will work from day one to ensure all communities in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough get the investment they need to share the growth and prosperity of areas like Cambridge.”
