Fury – as Huppert and Liberal Democrats back Bedroom Tax

Cambridge Liberal Democrat MP Julian Huppert has today been branded a hypocrite for failing to support Labour attempts to axe the Bedroom Tax in a Parliamentary vote yesterday. Mr Huppert failed to vote on Labour’s motion, despite Liberal Democrat claims in Cambridge in recent months that he opposes the measure. Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner says that the hypocrisy is breathtaking:

“Even by Liberal Democrats standards, this represents a new low. Labour’s proposal could not have been clearer:’ That this House believes that the housing benefit social sector size criteria, otherwise known as the bedroom tax, should be abolished with immediate effect.’ The Bedroom Tax is hugely unpopular and unfair, with latest figures from the Department of Work and Pensions showing 591 households currently impacted in Cambridge. People across the City should be clear – this cruel policy intoroduced by Conservatives and Liberal Democrats remains in place because of the hypocrisy of the Liberal Democrats who say one thing, then do another.”
