I’m Rahima Ahammed and I’m standing to be your City Councillor for Trumpington in the upcoming By-election. In terms of my background, my father was a commonwealth migrant steel worker who came to the UK in 1954 just after the war to help rebuild the country.  I was born and raised in Birmingham next door to Aston Villa football ground. In the summer of 1987,I came to visit Cambridge and have lived here ever since! Apart from a couple of years where I returned home to Birmingham.

I studied for an Undergraduate and Masters degrees in geography and sociology as a mature student at Anglia Ruskin. Later, I then studied at the Faculty of Education at Cambridge. I worked as a supply teacher in many secondary schools in and around Cambridge and later also in Birmingham. I also worked for the UKBA border Agency and for Cambridge City Council.

I have been involved in volunteering for over 30 years in relation to a variety of local causes which I am really passionate about. I also founded a charity in Bangladesh helping those who are deprived and destitute in the community.

Both my voluntary and professional work have allowed me to work in lots of different contexts including liaising with the City Council and County Council, Schools, Police, Prisons, Hospitals, Mosques and Church Community centres. This has also given me a strong understanding of the diverse needs within our communities.

If I am elected I will work with you, our residents, to make Trumpington a better place to live and to serve all of our community during these difficult times-when many are struggling during the cost of living crisis.
