Cambridge Labour Councillors have welcomed a new City Council 'Happy Chickens Plan' that will stop the council buying cruel battery-produced poultry and eggs. Instead, the Council will now purchase Freedom Food or Free Range produce for all council facilities and catering. The plan also includes asking caterers at events like the world famous Cambridge Folk Festival to switch too.
The 'Happy Chickens Plan' was agreed by all political parties at Monday night's Strategy and Resources Committee despite two Liberal Democrat councilors proposing an amendment that no action be taken on battery production.
The new plan recognizes another big 2012 event, when barren battery cages will be made illegal by the EU across Europe.
City Council Labour Leader, Councillor Lewis Herbert, who proposed the original Labour council motion to end the purchase of battery produce, said
"More chickens will now be happy chickens as a direct result of councils like Cambridge and local residents ending the purchase of battery chickens and eggs produced in cruel conditions. We hope that folk lovers at the annual Cambridge Folk Festival will also get this opportunity."
