Burns Night, the celebration of the life and works of Robert Burns, is a cultural staple of the Scottish calendar. Cambridge Labour Party is hosting a Burns Night Supper in honour of the Labour Party's Scottish roots, and to commemorate Scotland's important role in British Labour history.
Scottish Labour, and our comrades in the wider Scottish Labour movement have always stood shoulder to shoulder with us in solidarity to produce change for all of the people of these isles. From our parties founder Keir Hardie, the Red Clydesider rent strikes, Trade Unionists who lead the fight against British Fascism in Glasgow and Aberdeen, through the part the Scottish NUM played in the Miners Strike, the work of Scottish Activists in protesting against Apartheid, and commencing opposition to the poll tax in Scotland, where it was rolled out first. And to the hard graft of Scottish activists that wiped out the Tories in Scotland in 1997, and made Scotland a Labour Fortress until the last election.
Gemma Doyle, the former MP for West Dumbartonshire, and former Shadow Defence and Veterans Minister, will be the guest of honour, speaking about recent political developments in Scotland, and how Labour can regain the trust of the Scottish people, trust it badly needs if it is to ever win a British General election again.
