Labour councillors and residents are alarmed to learn that, as part of a proposal to demolish and rebuild the existing Logic House block used by the Seminar College, and the house next to it on Newmarket Road, the last Post Office in Abbey is due to close early next year.
The Newmarket Road Post Office is well-used by Abbey residents and provides a number of important services for local people.
At present, the Post Office will not look to immediately replace it, and current users will have to travel to either the city centre or the next nearest branch in Chesterton High Street, a mile away.
Abbey Cllr Richard Johnson said: “I am dismayed the Post Office believes that local need would continue to be met by not replacing the Newmarket Road branch. Post Offices are a valuable community facility and provide a sense of place.”
Local campaigner Nicky Massey adds: “Residents can be assured that strong protests will be made to the Post Office about the closure. But we need as many people as possible to help us make the case that a Post Office must be kept in Abbey. Signing the petition could make all the difference!”
